Greeneville High School’s class of 2017 ranked among the top 10 in the state for their composite score of 21.5 on the American College Test (ACT), which was higher than the record-breaking state average of 20.1. Greeneville City Schools was one of only 12 school districts across the state to average a 21.5 or above. As a whole, 55% of the 2017 graduating class scored a 21 or above on the ACT, compared to 42.3% across the state. Greeneville High also scored higher than the national average of 21.0.

Results from the ACT serve as a critical measure to indicate college and career readiness. “These results are incredibly encouraging,” Department of Education Commissioner Candice McQueen said in a release Tuesday. “More students are unlocking HOPE scholarship funds and creating options for their future. We want every student to be able to take their diploma and seamlessly move into their next step.”

Greeneville High’s average ACT score was outstanding, but students also performed above the state average in each of the four subjects. In English, the average score was 20.8, compared to 19.6 across the state. In reading, students averaged 21.7, compared to the state’s 20.5. In math, the average score was 21.5, compared to 19.4 across the state. Finally, in Science, students averaged 21.6, compared to 20.3 across the state.

“I am proud of the efforts on the part of the students and teachers at GHS,” said Director of Schools Dr. Jeff Moorhouse. “There have been focused efforts to support students in helping them to improve their ACT scores. I applaud everyone for their work in helping our students to meet the benchmarks for being future ready!”
